Don't Raise Your Voice - Improve Your Argument
Paper

Presentation will be in Slovene language.

Nowadays in modern English class, there is not a topic that, when discussed, wouldn't spark a difference of opinion among students. No matter how enriching it can be to let them voice their own opinions, there is always this one subject that can quickly go sour and a fierce quarrel can ensue.
To avoid one-sidedness taking over, a teacher can occasionally incorporate the use of classic pro et contra debate which can challenge students' opinions and beliefs. There are several debate formats, but at the heart of all of them lies the simple idea of two opposing teams that clash over a specific issue.
The application of the debate method in class proves to be very useful and enjoyable, bringing the class to life as everyone is engaged in work. Beside the fun aspect of it, what is arguably the greatest benefit of this activity is the prospect of a shift in students' thinking as they will quite possibly have to defend arguments about something they personally would never support. Additionally, the debate broadens their horizon and develops the much needed empathy in the world of such advanced technology and diminishing ability of profound understanding.
The presentation will briefly outline the basic elements of the debate as a discipline and the application of the method for teaching purposes. It will specifically focus on practical work done in class, presenting the activity and the benefits this method brings.
