Gifted Education in the Future: Teaching as a Profession
Paper

Presenter(s): Margaret Sutherland

Many countries in Europe and beyond are facing recruitment and retention problems. Burnout and workload are often cited as the main reason for leaving the profession. Learning more about teacher turnover might help policy makers to reduce shortages. But what of those who stay in the profession? With seven years left for the world to meet the Education 2030 agenda, this presentation will examine the role of teacher education in the drive for inclusive and equitable quality education for all. It will consider the importance of teaching as a profession and will explore the term “craft knowledge”. It will consider how a deeper understanding of this concept might help develop gifted pedagogical practices in ways that support and include gifted learners and move from the concept of gifted education to gifted educating.
