Paper

Presenter(s): Sonia Rey-Montejo

Students who are gifted and twice exceptional often receive accommodations in middle school and high school to provide support when learning foreign languages. Looking ahead to college or university study, many degree programs require students to take foreign language classes. Three strategies that 2e student can use to garner support and facilitate success when taking foreign language classes will be covered in this presentation. The first is to obtain qualification from the Disability Resource office to have approval for accommodations, and better understand what support can be offered by this office. Second, initiate a line of communication with the professor before registering for the language class to determine if the accommodations can be used while taking the class. In college, accommodations are allowed in certain classes only if the accommodation does not undermine the integrity of the course so understanding if the class the student has selected is a good fit is important before registering. Third, establish a working relationship with the professor during the first week of class. Self-advocate and discuss the syllabus and any assignments, timelines or exams where the student may wish to use accommodations. Develop a plan for the student to communicate regularly to the professor and to build learning relationships with other students as well as college resources such as the writing center and counseling office.
